چکیده

Multiphase flow is a critical process in a wide range of applications, including carbon sequestration, contaminant remediation, and groundwater management. Typically, this process is modeled by a nonlinear system of partial differential equations derived by considering the mass conservation of each phase (e.g., oil, water), along with constitutive laws for the relationship of phase velocity to phase pressure. In this study, we develop and study efficient solution algorithms for solving the algebraic systems of equations derived from a fully coupled and time-implicit treatment of models of multiphase flow. We explore the performance of several preconditioners based on algebraic multigrid (AMG) for solving the linearized problem, including “black-box” AMG applied directly to the system, a new version of constrained pressure residual multigrid (CPR-AMG) preconditioning, and a new preconditioner derived using an approximate Schur complement arising from the block factorization of the Jacobian. We show that the new methods are the most robust with respect to problem character, as determined by varying effects of capillary pressures, and we show that the block factorization preconditioner both is efficient and scales optimally with problem size.

Interface Solvers and Preconditioners of Domain Decomposition Type for Multiphase Flow in Multiblock Porous Media

A multiblock mortar approach to modeling multiphase ow in porous media decomposes the simulation domain into a series of blocks with possibly di erent physical and numerical models employed in each block. Matching conditions along the interfaces are imposed through the use of mortar nite elements. A parallel domain decomposition algorithm reduces the algebraic nonlinear system to an interface p...

Efficiency Study of the Multiscale Finite Volume Formulation for Multiphase Flow and Transport a Report Submitted to the Department of Energy Resources Engineering of Stanford University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Science

Multiscale methods have been developed to solve multiphase flow and transport problems in large-scale heterogeneous porous media accurately and efficiently. In this report, the computational efficiency of the multiscale finite-volume method (MSFV) is analyzed. The power of MSFV lies in its ability to combine local basis functions with a global coarse-scale problem to solve highly details hetero...

ADAPTIVE GRIDDING TECHNIQES FOR GROUNDWAm CONTAMINANT MODELING (COLLECTION OF PUBLICATIONS)

Mixed finite-element methods are attractive in modeling flows in porous media, since they can yield pressures and velocities having comparable accuracy. In solving the resulting discrete equations, however, poor matrix conditioning can arise both from spatial heterogeneity in the medium and from the fine grids needed to resolve that heterogeneity. This paper presents iterative schemes that over...

A mixed-dimensional finite volume method for multiphase flow in fractured porous media

We present a vertex-centered finite volume method for the fully coupled, fully implicit discretization of two-phase flow in fractured porous media. Fractures are discretely modeled as lower dimensional elements. The method works on unstructured, locally refined grids and on parallel computers with distributed memory. An implicit time discretization is employed and the nonlinear systems of equat...
